The Going-to-the-Sun Road in Glacier National Park is a breathtaking drive that offers unparalleled scenic beauty. However, due to its popularity, access to this iconic road requires a Going-to-the-Sun Road pass during peak season. In this blog post, we will provide you with ten essential tips to help you secure your pass, navigate the road’s exceptions, and make the most of your experience along this stunning route.

Plan Your Trip in Advance

To maximize your chances of obtaining a Going-to-the-Sun Road pass, plan your trip well in advance, you can reserve your pass four months prior to your visit. Passes are in high demand, so securing them early is key. Determine your desired dates and be prepared to book as soon as passes become available.

Know the Reservation Period

A pass is needed when entering the west entrance between May 24th and September 8th. Note that you can access the Going-to-the-Sun Road without a pass before or after these dates. Always check the official park website for updates on the road’s opening, as it typically becomes accessible in late June. Keep in mind that construction is taking place along Lake McDonald during the summer of 2023. When we visited in the summer of 2024 we did not encounter any road construction but always check their website ahead of time to be aware of any road closures.

Utilize Off-Peak Hours

You can enter the road before 6 am or after 3 pm without a pass. The evenings tend to be less busy, providing a more relaxed and enjoyable experience. Take advantage of these off-peak hours to explore the road without the need for a pass.

Consider Parking Challenges

Parking can be near impossible during peak visiting times of the day. If you plan to visit during these hours, either go after 3 pm when parking is more available or consider taking advantage of the free shuttle service. Check the park website for shuttle information and schedules.

Obtain a Park Pass

Remember, even if you enter the Going-to-the-Sun Road before 6 am or after 3 pm, a park pass is still required to enter Glacier National Park. Make sure you have the appropriate park pass, separate from the Going-to-the-Sun Road pass, to enter the park.

Stay Informed

Stay updated on park information by regularly checking the official Glacier National Park website. This will provide you with the latest road status, construction updates, and any changes to pass availability.

Reserve Up to Four Months in Advance

If you plan well in advance, you can reserve your Going-to-the-Sun Road pass up to four months ahead of your visit. However, if you’re unable to plan that far ahead, don’t worry. There are still opportunities to secure a pass closer to your travel date.

Day-Before Pass Release

A specific number of passes are released the day before your intended visit at 7 pm MDT. To increase your chances, log in to your recreation.gov account at least 10 minutes before the passes go live. Ensure you have a valid password and your payment information ready. These passes sell out quickly, so be prepared to secure yours promptly.

Be Prepared for Multiple Attempts

Sometimes obtaining a pass requires multiple attempts, especially during peak season.
