Deciding to sell our home and live in an RV was not a one-thing decision, there are many reasons why we sold our home to live full-time in an RV… 6 to be exact.

For two years Jason and I had pondered over the idea of selling our home and living in an RV, but it never felt like the right time. We had all these reasons why it seemed to not be for us. The kids were young and did we want to be confined to such a small space?

In the fall of 2021 my husband and I were discussing this idea again, and this time it just felt right. Things started falling into place. Our boys were a little older, we had already started embracing a simpler lifestyle by minimizing the stuff we had and loved spending time outside regardless of the weather. It seemed like it was the right time and we really wanted to sell our home while the market was hot.

Here are 6 reasons why we sold our home to live full-time in an RV

Time with our kids

Our oldest son was a sophomore in high school when we decided to sell, and we feel like these last couple of years with him are so special. We want to take this time to make more memories together, show him a little of the world and enjoy life before he graduates and feels like he wants to start ‘The Grind.’ Although we support him in whatever he wants to do going forward after high school, we feel this big shift coming and want to cherish this time with him.

Helping family

My husband’s father is having a harder time keeping up with his property and all the joys getting older brings. The extended family does so well with pitching in and helping around the property, but this would give us the opportunity to help him and help the family out too. Our home base for our 5th wheel is on his property, and we get to help him every day.

Ready to downsize

STUFF- UGH the stuff we’ve accumulated over the years is ridiculous. For the last couple of years I’ve tried to cut back on the amount of stuff we have and the stuff we need, but it just seems to still be everywhere. Moving forward with tiny living has really challenged us to let go of A LOT OF STUFF and be able to focus on our family. Downsizing to this extent has been a process and something that has happened in stages. It has been extremely refreshing to be able to manage less and realize we can get by with so much less. Plus the amount of time it takes to clean is priceless 😉

Living with more purpose

This is a really big one for us. Just getting by, and I don’t mean that just financially, but in the sense that we get so caught up in the house/work/financial stress that we feel like we don’t get to enjoy life. A huge part of this move for us is to be able to enjoy life, make more memories, go on more adventures, and enjoy more time as a family.

Financial freedom

Financial freedom!! YES YES YES. We were fine where we were, but yes a lot of the time we didn’t do things because it was expensive as a family of five. But with this transition, our goal is to live totally debt free, work fewer hours away from the family and be able to make more memories together.

Finding our forever home

We knew that the house we were in was not our forever home and we were starting to feel like Washington State may not be our forever home either. While we still have our home base in WA and will continue to be local for the next couple of years, we can’t wait to get out and explore the states. Who knows, maybe we will find our forever home or forever state while traveling.

Have you already made a switch to living full-time in an RV? What was the most challenging thing for you?

Are you thinking of making the switch to becoming a full-time RV family? What is holding you back?

I can’t wait to connect with you!

  1. We had a travel trailer when Hurricane Katrina hit Bay St Louis.
A tree feel on our trailer in West Hattiesburg. Our camp in the Bay was heavily damaged and full of nasty mud. We used the insurance money to start to rebuild our camp.
We’ve been contemplating selling our home and buying a nice new Fifth Wheel.

    • Oh my goodness! I am so sorry a tree fell on our trailer. That must have been devastating. We love living the 5th wheel life and hopefully you do too!
